<p>I&#8217;ve often wondered if the &#8220;close doors&#8221; button in elevators really do anything.  Turns out that <a href="http://architectures.danlockton.co.uk/2008/10/01/placebo-buttons-false-affordances-and-habit-forming/">sometimes they do, sometimes they don&#8217;t</a> but they do alter our perception of what&#8217;s happening.    </p>
